Taos NM - Focus on Locals not Tourists
Dear Taos, take care of those who live there above your desire for tourism money. It will grow a stronger base and, in time, increase the healthy authenticity that tourists seek anyway.
I’ve been saying it for awhile, and now nature is presenting the reason in a different form. no snow for the ski valley.
Not much snow lately in a place where local government seems avoids critiquing their reliance upon the ski valley. Addiction maybe.
Tourism is viewed as a large resource for income and seasonal money. The problem is that locals aren’t able to express their creativity in a raw way. The banners over the roads or the headlines of the local news shouldn’t speak to our substance abuse problems, our property crime rate or our increased love of chain stores. It is supposed to look good for tourists.
I’d love to see an abundance of space given to local modern and historic creativity. Not galleries, but public art, public thoughts, locals celebrated as celebrities.
To redirect a town’s culture from its own timeless truth, to one that is suppose to make tourists feel intrigued, is to also be a town that is not prepared for the effects of climate change, or the ongoing truth and justice in loving ones own collective humanity.
